Driftwood Publishing Purchased!

Empire Games announced today the purchase of Driftwood Publishing and the acquisition of The Riddle of Steel Role Playing game line of books. Jake Norwood, the founder of Driftwood Publishing and author of the critically acclaimed The Riddle of Steel, will be staying at Driftwood as both a consultant for the game and a writer of future supplements. Of Beasts and Men author, Brian Leybourne, has taken over as line developer of The Riddle of Steel and will be putting the finishing touches on the much-anticipated Flower of Battle supplement, to be released this fall. Future products will be released on a quarterly basis starting in winter of 2005, and will include Sorcery and The Fey, the magical supplement for The Riddle of Steel.

"After several offers, I chose Empire Games due to their clear dedication to the continuation of the Riddle of Steel line without compromising its integrity," said Jake Norwood. "This is a great step for Driftwood Publishing and the Riddle of Steel; one which heralds growth and development on a scale that was previously impossible."

“We are both very proud and honored to become the Publisher for The Riddle of Steel,” said George Thompson, the new C.E.O of Driftwood Publishing. “The game has broken quite a bit of new ground within the gaming industry and we plan to build on that success.”

"I'm very excited at the possibilities this development brings about,” Brian Leybourne commented. “The merger of Driftwood's talent and Empire Games size, stability and enthusiasm can only mean great things for the future of the Riddle of Steel.”

All Driftwood Publishing products are available at finer Game, Hobby, and Comic book stores throughout the world, or directly from www.theriddleofsteel.net

As many of you are aware, I have spent the last year and a half trying to gain entrance to the United States Army Officer Corps as an Intelligence Officer. At times it seemed that I would never get in, or that it would take an eternity to finally finish processing an endless series of forms and waivers. During this time I have continued working a variety of low-paying civilian jobs, supporting Driftwood Publishing, and staying heavily involved in the Association for Renaissance Martial arts as a student, researcher, and instructor.

A short time ago my paperwork finally processed and I made it to boards for consideration. Knowing that nothing is a sure thing I waited until a contract was on the table before making this knowledge generally available. That day was last Monday, July 12, 2004. At 2:45pm (hereafter 1445, heh) I signed that contract and was sworn in as a Cadet/Officer Candidate in the US Army. This is an exciting time for me, as at the age of 26 I’m finally moving in the career direction that I have long desired, but seemed to find constantly unattainable. As with all silver linings, however, there is also a cloud.

It was requested that I report for training on August 2, a month prior to my stated availability date, as the Army has a tendency to do. I objected on grounds of important prior commitments (ARMA seminars to be taught, Gen Con for promoting The Flower of Battle, which itself would be completed in the early weeks of August, and a family vacation, to name a few), and an alternate shipping date in late October was offered. After some deliberation with my own multiple personalities and those of my family, I decided that four months of relative unemployment could not be justified by these other hobby-based projects. I chose August 2, only three weeks away.

In my remaining civilian days this month I will be moving, preparing Driftwood Publishing for a 6 to 18 month hiatus, and completing a few promised articles for the ARMA, in addition to spending a few uninterrupted days with my incomparable wife.

This also means that reaching me by PM or email starting Wednesday of next week is futile. I will be incommunicado. Sorry. Brian will still be around to answer questions. Customer service issues need to be sent to woody@tundra-sales-org.com. Thanks so much for understanding at this time.

Jake

December 27, 2003

Happy belated holidays to Riddle-Seekers everywhere! What's under the tree? Some fan fiction by Kimmo Kyttä of Finland (with Author's notes).

The year is almost over, and Driftwood Publishing is still going strong. This past year has been nothing but a wonderful (if occasionally stressful) experience, none of which could have happened without the support of TROS fans everywhere. Thanks to good sales on Of Beasts and Men (now in its third printing) in addition to increased core rulebook sales, work is going full steam ahead on The Flower of Battle. TFOB looks to be the mother of all supplements, and we expect to premiere it at Origins Game Convention in 2004, give or take. Early in 2004 you can expect a sneak-preview for The Flower of Battle here at www.theriddleofsteel.net.

Also, because the Christmas season is such a busy time for postal services around the world, there may be some delays in shipping of books ordered in December. We prepared in advance to handle this, but there were about 4 times as many orders as initially anticipated. It's a good thing in the long run, I promise! If any books ordered do not arrive in two weeks or so from the time they were ordered, contact Woody Eblom at woody@tundra-sales-org.com, who handles all of our distribution.

In, uh, secular news, the trip to Europe was fantastic. Much of the trip was spent researching arms and armor for TFOB in Austria, Albania, Poland, Italy, and the Czech Republic. A few other side-projects commenced at that same time, all of which will be revealed to our loyal fans in due time. Until then, watch the forum.

August 20, 2003

I'm out of town (in Europe, actually), and so all Driftwood Publishing business will either be on hold until mid-to-late October when I return. Emergency business concerning shipping and distribution should be sent to Woody Eblom (woody@tundra-sales-org.com), other emergency issues should be deferred to Brian Leybourne (bleybourne@hotmail.com). I can be reached at kuba_norwood@hotmail.com, but only if you really really really need me. Also, clearly, only paypal payments are currently accepted, due to my having a floating address at the moment.

Also, due to a hiccup in distribution, the second printing of OBAM is shipping late, but it's still coming--don't worry! We should be shipping copies out by the end of the month.

August 10, 2003

OF BEASTS AND MEN, our first official supplement, is again available for purchase and download as a PDF, in print, or as a combo set, thanks to a second printing! OBAM should be in worldwide distribution starting in September this year. Until then it's available here, at the TROS Market, as always.

In addition, our international customers can now order any TROS products (all two of them!) with their own, customized buttons at our International Order Market page.

And if all that wasn't enough, I just updated the download page with 9 premade characters for the TROS Character Generator!

August 2, 2003 The TROS Fan Fiction page has been added, with one introductory piece.

July 28, 2003 The first printing of OF BEASTS AND MEN has sold out. We are currently arranging a second printing. Until then the book is only available as a PDF.

July 16, 2003 OF BEASTS AND MEN, our first official supplement, is available for purchase and download as a PDF or a limited-run Print edition (ships Monday 28th). We also intend on providing a limited number of print copies for convention sales (yes, we'll have copies at Gen Con!). 140 pages of monsters, stories, characters and tables! We'll post more when we know more.Check it out in the TROS Market.

July 16, 2003 The Riddle of Steel has been nominated for the prestigious Diana Jones Award, with 6 other candidates.

July 3, 2003 I've completed more updated pages, including an all-new Reviews Page!
